Is Primark the answer for the ailing High Street?

Bucking the trend for online shopping, Primark has defied the odds and opened two new stores in the UK in April, both ranking in the top five largest stores in the country.  Bruce Gillingham Pollard who act for the landlord at Centre MK in Milton Keynes, have secured Primark a 75,000 sq ft site, which opened its doors on 16th April.  Spread over 3 this brand new store includes a beauty studio and a personalisation service.

Just a week earlier, Primark opened the biggest Primark in the world in Birmingham.  Taking over the former Pavillion Shopping Centre in its entirety, it covers 161,000 sq ft over five floors, and welcomed some 5000 customers through its doors on the first day trading. It features a Disney-themed cafe, a mens’ barber, a blow dry bar, a beauty studio and a personalisation service.

As a brand that has zero online presence, Primark could be one of the few operators who could help breathe new life into disused shopping centres and department stores.  Indeed, they are already reinventing themselves in keeping with the current trend of offering other services alongside shopping.
