Potetkjelleren, Bergen, Norway

The art of discovery

The art of discovery

Emily Atkin

Potetkjelleren is a former potato cellar which now is one of the best restaurants in Bergen. This restaurant is popular with both locals and visitors alike and having eaten there I can understand why!
The entrance is set back off a side street just behind the fish market on the seafront. It is however a very unassuming entrance which admittedly I did walk past without noticing the first time. On the ground floor is the open kitchen and cloakroom and the main restaurant is down some very smooth worm steps into the actual cellar. Everything is candlelit, it's cosy and yet strikingly simple.  An element of the excitement with this restaurant was the 'Art of Discovery'  - searching for this restaurant made you feel like you had found a hidden gem. This is a trend we are seeing throughout the luxury and travel market today.
The restaurant specialises in a short menu that is seasonal and uses as much local produce as possible. The food was divine. New foods, tastes and combinations that we don't have in the UK, plus beautifully presented. If Norway is a country you'd like to visit for the Fjords and landscape, make pretty Bergen a stop off too and whilst there visit the Potetkjelleren.
