Mercato Metropolitano, London

Bringing the essence of Italy to Elephant and Castle!

Bringing the essence of Italy to Elephant and Castle!

Nigel Gillingham

A new Italian market, from Milan, has sprung up in ‘So-bo’ (South Borough) and so we decided to make a visit! Lucky with the weather, we arrived late afternoon and were able to sit outside on the picnic style benches.
Housed in a disused paper factory, Mercato Metropolitano spans over 45 000 ft and brings together some of the best small producers, farmers and artisans London and Italy has to offer. On the food side, we were able to chose from a mixture of Italian and London based artisan producers including a pizza maker from Naples, bakery, fishmongers, butchers, coffee roasters, artisan beer makers, cheesemongers and specialist charcuterie. On this sunny day we enjoyed some chilled rose from the Italian wines on offer and some pizza slices with some delicious gelato to finish.
Not finished with the market, there's also a big Italian supermarket. Prezzemolo e vitale is an independent supermarket from Palermo which is on the ground floor of the main three-storey building on the site. Over that, there's a barber shop and boxing gym, and over that is MAX, a co-working space. It’s an extremely sociable destination, perfect for spending time with large groups of family and friends, enjoying tasty food and wine – they have most definitely brought the essence of Italy to Elephant and Castle!
