Mast Brothers, Williamsburg

An education in chocolate

An education in chocolate

Thea Rowe

Mast Brothers is a New York based chocolate maker with stores in Brooklyn, LA and London. I stumbled across the store whilst wondering the streets of Williamsburg, when the waft of fresh chocolate sent me charging through their door.
The store fit out is quite minimalist with fresh white walls, dark wooden display cases and piles of large sacks of cocoa beans. Chocolate is being made throughout the day which you see being made in front of you as the chocolatiers grind down the beans. There is also running chocolate (!) any chocolate lovers dream!
The aim of Mast Brothers is to educate the consumer about high-quality chocolate. You can show up at the store anytime for a tour where the workers will show you their skill and test some of their chocolate. You can of course buy this delicious chocolate from the store, with flavours ranging from chocolate and sea salt to goat's milk. The packaging is bright and fun, the workers, much like the owners, are quirky. Is this the modern day equivalent to Willy Wonkers factory?!
