Canning Town, London

A living experiment

A living experiment

Nick Halley

The Canning Town Caravanserai is a living experiment in regeneration on a brownfield site near Canning Town Station. The site is designed to bring people together to exchange ideas, to socialise and to share stories from travels around the world. It has sourced and used local resources innovatively, as well as securing the voluntary time of local organisations, students, and professionals to drive forward development.
The end result is a community in it’s own right, and walking in to this Caravanserai in arty East London symbolises the continued development of the surrounding area. It is a great use for a site that is earmarked to be developed in the next few years, and would otherwise be ‘dead space’.
The Caravanserai also hosts parties for local residents to come and enjoy a drink at a reasonable price, making it a destination where all the local residents from the new surrounding developments can come and meet their neighbours. Caravanserai’s were originally introduced on well known trade routes for travelers to relax after a long day on the road, and to support the flow of commerce and information along these routes.
