The quest for a less formal environment when travelling

The quest for a less formal environment when travelling

Tracey Pollard

Following the rising number of boutique hotels, we are now seeing the rise of the boutique B&B and Hostels which reflects our quest for the less formal environment when travelling.  The boutique B&B now offer the same level of stylish interiors but at more affordable price points and often more hands on host. 94DR in Edinburgh is a boutique guest house where you receive the warmest of welcomes from owners Paul, John and Moli the dog.  The extra level of service is akin to top end concierge of a 5 star hotel; Paul will reserve theatre tickets, book tables or secure a tour of Edinburgh.

The highlight however, is the food. It is amazing, the porridge was the best I have ever eaten and for those who prefer a lie-in, a breakfast box can be delivered straight to your room.  The whole house can also be booked out exclusively for a “house party” and the team will design a bespoke menu to match your event and budget.

Thirty Eight in Clifton, Bristol is another boutique B&B offering a warm and friendly greeting.  Ten stylish bedrooms are set in a Georgian mansion house.  No two rooms are the same, although each offers the most amazing views either over the Downs or over the city.  With rolled top baths, wooden panels and original art work the décor is more akin to a high end hotel, yet doubles range from £100 whilst suites are available at £135.

The demand for more stylish accommodation has also reached the hostel market, good examples include The Bunk Beyuglu House is Istanbul offering a minimalist style, with all white walls and white furniture.  Hlemmur Square in Reykjavik is set within a 1930’s art deco building and offers the choice of either a hostel style room or a private room with king size beds, mini bar or access to a gym. The hostel benefits from communal kitchens, A bar and café located on the ground floor and a small cinema.

With such cost effective style, who needs to spend 5 star prices.
