Amsterdam is a charming and exciting city with many great retail and restaurant inspirations. It was interesting to recognise many of the trends currently emerging in London, to name a few; SLA – a salad bar with food lab downstairs, a great example of an interactive environment, Vyne – a wine bar, I Love Vintage – a pop up store and online vintage emporium, reflecting our ever growing interest in upcylcing and vintage. Latie – a great example of retail offers combining various sectors this quaint café sells homewares and accessorises or Bilder & de Clerq - an urban take on a farm shop. But if i had to choose one favourite it would have to be Henk – a pop up restaurant and gin bar.
During a weekend in Amsterdam we stumbled upon “Henk” on the beautiful Prinsengracht canal. Henk is a pop up, run by 3 sisters, with a restaurant on the upper ground floor and a pop up gin bar on the lower ground. Each is connected to the other whilst also having independent entrances. The atmosphere was buzzy, the staff were super friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Between us we shared a starter – possibly the best parfait I’ve ever eaten, each had a main course and shared a pudding.
Being a pop up the fit out was simple but effective. With wooden crates, a racing go-kart, a library of books stapled to the wall and a glass floor down into the kitchen it is fair to say the restaurant was accessorised with an eclectic mix of props. However the presentation, quality and detail of the food was superb. It was all delicious and beautifully presented. They even had the rotisserie belly pork at the front of the kitchen just to tempt you into a bit more! Whilst watching the world go by there was a noticeable change in the crowd who were there – from families out for a celebratory Sunday dinner to a younger and cooler team. This was only amplified as dinner turned to drinks in the gin bar!  This super restaurant with punchy gin cocktails will sadly only be around until December, so it’s a perfect excuse to book that weekend away now!
